On Tuesday, February 24, 2015, Jacob Follmer, a Tioga High School
Junior, was our guest speaker. Jacob was “drafted” by Richard Fries our Camp Ryla Chair, to commit to this outstanding Rotary program. Participants can be any age, most events focus on secondary school students, university students, or young professionals. Camp Ryla is a 4 day leadership program held at Boys Camp Calvin Crest in the Oakhurst area. Jacob was picked because of his leadership skills and his desire to be part of the professional world. Jacob talked about his experiences during this event. He is planning to pursue a carrier in Engineering and therefore was selected as a “cabin” engineer. He was impressed by the way the Camp was managed, by the Youth themselves! Jacob found this leadership Camp a great experience and he is going to apply for it again next year. We wish Jacob all the success in his future endeavors.

We had our 2015 Speech Contest on February 3, 2015. And what a contest it was! Four Students from Tioga High participated in this competition, they are Taryn Warren a senior, Brando Nelson Haven a senior, Kayla Eckhart also a senior and Jacob Folder a junior. All four speakers worked hard and came up with excellent material. The topic of the speech, determined by Rotary International, was this year “Dream, Act, Win, Now. Some of these speakers really kept us spellbound with what they had to say. It seems that the quality of the participants in our small High School keep increasing over the years.
Here are the results:
First Place and a $125.00 award went to Kayla Eckhart
Second place and a $100.00 award went to Tarynn Warren
Third place and a $75.00 award went to Brando Nelson Haven.
Jacob Folder finished fourth with a Honorable mention and a $25.00 check
He will come back next year as a Senior and give it an other shot.
We at the Groveland Rotary are very proud of our students and we thank them for their participation!

Our Red, White and Blue ball held on Saturday, January 31, 2015, was as usual, a great success. All the tickets were sold for this yearly event. The meals were excellent and the band “HomeGrown” caused many guests to try out their dancing shoes. Every year this event is organized to commemorate the 9-11 disaster and to support our militairy. Our thanks to Jim Thayer who spend many hours organizing this so popular evening. We hope every body had a great time and we count on you again next year.
