Wednesday, December 17, our President Wayne Phillips, Herman Schaap, Larry Santa Maria and Rudy Manzo went to Don Pedro Elementary School in La Grange to deliver dictionaries to the third grade. This was the third School this year that was part of this yearly event. President Phillips explained to the Children what Rotary is all about and talked about the eradication of polio in a way that the Kids could understand what this meant. He also talked about the history of the Rotary. Thirty Children were excited to receive their books, and after they received their copy, Herman had them look up the word “Rotary” in their new books. Many hands went up in a short time. We hope that these students will use the dictionary during their education.
He found the word “Rotary”!

Dusty Vaughn, Georgia Dempsey and Rebecca Garcia from the US Forest Service visited us at our December 9 meeting with an outstanding presentation. The topic was the ecological restoration of the rim fire damaged area.
Dusty, who is a public service leader and a recreation specialist, started the presentation with an explanation of the damage caused by the fire and the recovery work that is going on. It is amazing to understand that only 7% of the wilderness “floor” is damaged. Recovery in that area will take a life time.
Georgia Dempsey is a public affairs officer for the rim fire, followed with a thorough explanation of what is involved to create new seedlings and the growing of young shoots to reforest the burned area. She talked about the pine cone harvest. Seedlings are removed from these cones and planted to grow the shoots needed for the restoration of the burned wilderness.
Rebecca, who is a Public Affair Officer took notes of the presentation to improve the material needed to educate the people as well as possible.
All in all a great and informative meeting!
